The Red Delicious Apple (not related to the Yellow Delicious, by the way) has long been a favorite of ours here at Rabbit Ridge Nursery, and for lots and lots of reasons. A large firm red apple that ripens mid season with a fine, sweet flavor. Home use for eating, pies, sauces, and preserves. Fruit trees need a minimum of 6-8 hours sunlight daily, and they need adequate moisture in order to bear heavy fruit. Apple trees are not typically drought tolerant. Red Delicious will cross pollinate with Granny Smith. All of Rabbit Ridge Nursery apple trees are at least four years old and should fruit in a year to two years. EZ Pick Fruits are pruned by us to grow such that the branching starts at about knee level and they are generally finished in a 'vase-shaped' or open style. This allows better fruit access and heavier fruit production. Additionally, you will be able to chose how high you want your fruit tree to be at it's maturity. After harvesting, simply cut back the scaffolding 2 feet below the desired height you want and, when the tree goes dormant, do the cross branch pruning. It is as simple as that!! Red Delicious is a Spur Apple, meaning
they are naturally smaller growing trees giving semi-dwarf like sizes. And their apples tend to grow on the inside of the tree which makes making picking easier. They also seem to fare better in hotter climates.
