An heirloom cultivar, reportedly dating back to Wolf River, Wisconsin, sometime in the 1870s. The remarkable thing about this apple is that you can eat it fresh as well as cook with (it keeps it's shape, unlike many other that become apple sauce in your pie), and it probably makes the best apple butter in the world. If you like apples for cooking, then you have probably already used Wolf River.
