Newer to our pear collection, Ayers is actually an old southern favorite and has been around for a long time. The tree is quite vigorous, upright and has a good reputation of being very fire blight resistant. The blooms are partially self-pollinating, but as with all self fertile small fruits, I think you will find you have a better fruit set and better crop when crossed with another pear tree with similar bloom stages. The fruit are yellow with a red blush. The flesh is smooth and seems to almost melt in your mouth with a very sweet flavor. Ripens late July to early August in our part of the country.
