In grass-like clumps or mounds, Dwarf Mondo Grass, Ophiopogon japonicus, is an ornamental grass which grows to only about 4 inches in height and is closely related to the liriope family of grasses. It is also known as Dwarf Lily turf, Mondo Grass Dwarf and Monkey Grass. This perennial evergreen grows in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. It spreads by underground stems or tubers. Widely used in rock gardens, seashore plantings, borders and groundcovers. It is intolerant of full sun. Works especially well when planted between walking or stepping stones, as it does not spread as much as many of the other grasses do and remains very short. We have used it in 25 gallon patio planters as a fill in for ornamental trees..
